Metro is going - Wine Tasting!

The Metro Retention Committee Co-Chairs, Tammy Murray of Andersen Windows and Doors and Brian Maffia of General Plumbing Supply decided it was time to shake things up. Therefore, Metro's next General Membership Meeting will be taking place at Four Sisters Winery and be a fun wine tasting.

 

Join us as we take in the 250-acre vineyard view of beautiful rolling fields and picturesques hills in Warren County.

Never been to a Wine Tasting or perhaps a little unsure about attending one? We get it - everyone gets a tad intimidated when it comes to these. Not everyone knows what a tannin is. Don't worry Metro has you covered. Please enjoy some Wine Tasting Tips & Tricks to use below.

 

1. Make sure to cleanse your palate properly - this is a crucial step in the process if one wants to distinguish between the different notes and flavors of each wine. A palate cleanser or "intermezzo" is usually a light, clean neutral flavor with a refreshing taste that leaves very little or no aftertaste. Popular palate cleansers are: white bread, crackers, pineapple, apples, olives, cheese, celery, roast beef, pears, coffee beans, bananas, tortilla chips, beer (believe it or not), light tea, and water at room temperature

2. Swirl & Sniff - remember those scratch and sniff markers or stickers - it's like the adult version of that. This is when you take your wine glass and move it around in circle to allow more oxygen in making the wine more fragrant. After the swirl you take a sniff by lowering your nose to the rim and inhaling deeply. Sense of smell plays a huge role in your sense of taste. This is usually when someone says "I smell ____"

3. To Swish & Spit or To Swish & Swallow - the choice is yours really. Most places these days will give you a designated "spittoon" bucket for you to spit out the wine if you so choose to do so due to remaining sober throughout the tasting or because you simply are not a fan of that particular wine - you cannot like them all. The main point of this category is the Swish - where you take a sip of wine and move it all around your mouth while considering the different flavors. This is when people say "I taste ____"

4. Work Light Wines to Heavier Wines - if possible start with sparkling wines, then fresh whites, richer whites and then move onto the reds

5. Red-Wine & Teeth - this comes from years in the industry but you can never go wrong with drinking red wine through a straw to avoid this or bring a toothbrush and toothpaste along for the ride. Gum works too if you don't want to lug all that around.

6. Take Notes & Ask Questions - Everyone says they will remember the name of the wine they had that they loved but then they don't. There is no harm in writing it down. Also, Winemakers and owners usually love to talk backstory so don't shy away from asking questions.

 

Most of all though remember to HAVE FUN! Just because you are tasting Wine doesn't mean it has to be serious.
